Server Configuration
Describes the environment variables required to run the server.

| DATABASE_URL | No | Optional PostgreSQL connection URL. Required when using an external database instead of the local .env generated by setup. | |
| COMPANYX_DATA_DIR | Yes | Absolute path to the directory containing the official Company-X data (e.g., data/companyx). | |
| OLLAMA_CHAT_MODEL | No | Optional Ollama chat model name to use when POLICYGRAPH_LLM_MODE is set (e.g., 'gemma4:e2b'). | |
| POLICYGRAPH_RUNTIME | Yes | Runtime mode for the policy graph and data adapters. Use 'offline' for the local baseline or 'postgres' for the PostgreSQL/pgvector path. | |
| POLICYGRAPH_LLM_MODE | No | Optional LLM assist mode. Set to 'assist' to enable local LLM planning and answer generation via Ollama. | |
| POLICYGRAPH_ACTOR_ROLE | Yes | Fixed role assigned to the MCP server (e.g., 'analyst'). This cannot be changed via model input and is enforced server-side. |
